CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

REALIZATION SETS IN

SAMANTHA

I jolt awake to a horrible sound. It takes me a few minutes to recognize my surroundings, and I think I’m just hearing things when I again hear it. This time so loud that Maxx and Levi leap from the bed and scamper away. “Oliver?” I feel for Oliver in bed, but he’s not there nor has he been in bed. His side of the bed is cold and decorative pillows haven’t been removed. I get out of bed and try to locate where the sounds are originating from. Following the source of the noise, I end up in the spare bathroom, and what I see in front of me is something I never would have expected to see.

Oliver is huddled on the floor of the steaming hot shower. The water is so hot it’s as if someone poured water on the hot stones in a sauna. Dense steam billows out of the shower. Stepping closer, I see his face is buried in his arms which are wrapped around his knees. I don’t know what happened, but I’ve never seen him like this before. He’s always been so strong, but right now he resembled a small child as a soul retching wail escapes him.

I quietly slip through the shower door kneeling in front of him, and the scorching hot water rains down on my back scalding me. He still hasn’t noticed me, his skin bright red from the torrent water. I wrap my arms around him as I whisper in his ear, the way he has done for me so many times before.

He releases his arms from around his knees and pulls me into him, burying his face in my water-soaked T-shirt. His grip on me is so tight I can hardly breathe. His body shudders as he tries to control his emotions. “I killed him.”

“Killed who, Oliver?”

“I killed him, Sam, I killed him,” he repeats as he continues to sob.

“Oliver, honey, let’s get you out of here,” I say after some time has passed. I break the hold he has on me to study his face. He appears as if he’s a lost little boy, his eyes red and swollen. I run my hand over his cheek. “Oliver, whatever this is, I’ll be by your side.” I gaze into his weary indigo eyes making sure he really sees and understands me. “I love you, Oliver.”

He clings to me as if I’m his lifeline. Finally, he takes a deep, steady breath and loosens his grip on me. I help him stand, then I shrug out of my wet T-shirt, letting it pool at my feet as I turn off the water. Grabbing two big white bath towels, I wrap one around my body and the other around Oliver’s waist.

Taking his hand, I lead him to the master bedroom, pulling back the covers on the bed as he slips on a pair of boxers. He slips under the covers. Slipping into a tank top and shorts, I pad toward the bedroom door.
